A six-pack Camaro used to be regarded as the "secretary" version, but no more...unless that secretary's been to the Jim Russell school. You get two fewer cylinders than the all-conquering, Corvette-motored Camaro SS, but the direct-injected 4-cam 3.6-liter makes 304 bhp on regular fuel (with an 11.3:1 compression ratio, no less!). Our test car was fitted with the optional ($995) Hydra-Matic 6L50 6-speed automatic, its tall 0.67:1 overdrive helping it to achieve 29 mpg in EPA's highway cycle. Yet the combination powers the Camaro to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds and through the quarter mile in 14.5. True, it's a long way off the SS's 12.9-sec. posting, but for a little historical context, consider that the 2010 RS V-6 will out-accelerate the 5.7-liter Camaro Z28 from the mid-1990s.
Fit the $1750 RS package and the V-6 edges closer to the V-8's aura of toughness with a comparable wheel package — 20 x 8 and 20 x 9 alloys mounted with Pirelli P Zero tires, size 245/45-20 front and 275/40-20 rear. Other RS enhancements include HID headlights with "halo rings" (similar to BMW's angel eyes treatment), a rear lip spoiler and RS-specific taillights with dark chrome surrounds. Even with the V-6's softer FE2 suspension, the Camaro RS is an entertaining drive, with decent grip (0.86g) and a slalom strafing of 66.5 mph that's fractionally faster than the SS's. Now if only Chevy could tune the V-6 to sound more like a V-8.
